I received an email this evening from a group called Wifi for Humanity. It left me speechless:
Tim, please pass on to volunteers just how incredibly helpful the eq.org.nz recovery map site has been. Since I arrived back in Christchurch on Monday, I was pointed to this site directly from any Christchurch search on Google and have continued to check the maps innumerable times when looking for information: as I’m about to head out, or when I was sitting at the Jungle Patrol cafe in the badly-affected area of New Brighton where we set up free wifi. It was a relief to be able to have answers when people come in asking questions, such as what petrol station is open near us, where the portaloos are, who has water, what supermarket has reopened, or bank service. Along with GeoNet, a site that has since become fodder for drinking games (guess what magnitude the latest tremor was), the earthquake recovery site is not only immediately useful, but we trust it to be up-to-date and away from political interests. Thank you for your efforts, they are gratefully welcome. While living without water and power has been trying, knowing that after a long drive across broken roads there are open services waiting for us just helps us get through the day.
